Top Tips for Getting the Best Fit

Comments (0)

picking shoesFinding shoes is a delightful day for some and a trudging chore for others. However you feel about this activity, your feet demand a proper shoe fitting to ensure the most comfort and support with your selections. This not only helps you avoid foot and ankle problems from excessive stress on your feet, but can even save you money from having to make return trips to the mall (we understand this isn’t an incentive for everyone…).

Here are some tips when it comes to finding shoes that fit:

  • Check Your Size – If you haven’t had your feet measured in a while, do so. Feet sizes change with age. Getting your updated shoe size will give you a good baseline for trying out pairs.

  • Check the Time – Feet can grow up to 8% during the day. Try shoes later in the day or the evening when feet tend to be their largest to prevent a pair that gets too tight as the sun goes down.

  • Check the Larger Foot – Many people have one foot larger than the other. Shoe fitting should be tailored toward this foot.

  • Check the Toebox – Avoid pointed toeboxes. Opt for round or square ones to allow the toes room to lie flat and uncrowded.

  • Check the Trouble Spots – This includes making sure you have about a half-inch of space between your longest toe and the tip of the shoe, seeing that the ball of the foot has adequate room in the widest part of the shoe, and ensuring your heel is comfortably supported without slipping.

  • Check the Feel – Regardless of what the shoe size says, take time to make sure has an overall comfortable fit. If the shoe needs to be “stretched out,” don’t buy it. It’s not for you.

The above checklist (get it?) offers a good foundation for shoe shopping, but the doctors at California Foot and Ankle Institute can provide even further help finding the right footwear for your foot and ankle needs.
